Primary Teaching for Mastery Lead (1-2 days a week)

Job Title:                              Assistant Maths Hub Lead (Primary Teaching for Mastery Lead)

Working Pattern:             1  or 2 days a week

Start date: September 2021 (Handover to take place in July 2021)

End date: Contact to be renewed annually subject to DFE funding (Initially July 2022)

Salary:                                  £15,000 p.a.

For Teachers: Paid to the host school for teachers’ time

Independent applicants: Paid directly to employee

Purpose:                              The purpose of this role is to provide oversight of teaching for mastery in Primary schools across the Maths Hub’s area, by leading, developing, and providing expertise for, this aspect of the hub’s work. (Hounslow, Hillingdon, Ealing, Brent, Harrow, Hammersmith and Fulham, Kensington, and Chelsea)

Responsible to:                 The London Central and West Maths Hub Lead and Senior Link

Job Description:              

Leadership and Management Team
Work with the Maths Hub Leadership and Management (MHLM)team to plan how to address the strategic goal for primary schools
Participating in MHLM team meetings
Regularly updating Maths Hub Lead on work progress
Work closely with our other Primary Mastery Lead


Strategic boards and partnerships
Identifying leading Teaching for Mastery (TfM) schools as potential influencers
Reporting to Strategic Board, as required


Local leaders of mathematics education
Providing support to Mastery Specialists through identifying need, planning, facilitating, and evaluating professional development
Working with MHL to identify, recruit and appoint future Mastery Specialists
Nurturing relationship with Mastery Specialist schools, especially Head Teachers to secure sustained commitment to TfM.
Having knowledge of other Work Groups and the work of other Local Leaders of Maths Education (LLME)


Planning, monitoring and evaluation
Overseeing and co-ordinating the work of Mastery Specialists (MS) and quality assuring workgroups
Managing the deployment of the MS team
Co-ordinating progress reports from MS and WGLs
Co-ordinating China England programme
Planning for developments within primary provision
Participating in peer review process


Support all specialists through the evaluation process



Communication, engagement, and recruitment
Working with school leaders to ensure sustained participation in the Maths Hub offer


Identifying schools suitable for participation
Working with MHL to recruit WG schools
Communicating with and influencing HTs to consider TfM best practices as we move into a more embedding and sustaining focus


Finance and data management
An understanding and knowledge of the payments made to specialists and schools


Ensuring there are clear procedures communicated and implemented related to textbook grants and teacher release grants


Working with Maths Hub Network, NCETM and DFE
Actively engaging in Primary Teaching for Mastery Lead (TfML) forums and other online communities


Collaborating with other Primary TfMLs across network, especially with neighbouring hubs


Person Specification:            


Good knowledge of landscape, curriculum, and priorities of Primary Mathematics

  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Good leadership and people management skills
  • Experience of teaching Primary Maths and Maths Leadership
  • Experience of delivering mathematics CPD


  • Based in a school/college with excellent practice
  • Successful track record of working effectively with other professionals across a range of Primary schools
