Mastery Focused Issue: Lesson Design

(Y1, Y2 and Y3 focus)

This work group will give you the opportunity to learn with an experienced mastery specialist and Roehampton Lecturer (Jonathan East and Lorraine Hartley), where you will be collaboratively planning and working with the NCETM Mastery Professional Development Materials to feel confident with your lesson design.

Refining teachers’ understanding of lesson design is a crucial element of developing teaching for mastery.  Teachers in this Work Group will work together to plan exemplar lessons (drawing on new Mastery Professional Development materials produced by NCETM/Maths Hubs) and in so doing will improve lesson design across their school.

It involves 3 face to face workshops with Jonathan and Lorraine across Autumn 2, Spring 1 and Spring 2.  There will also be the chance to spend half a day with Jonathan looking in detail about what lesson design looks like in your own setting as well as more planning and teaching involved.

Participants will be expected to attend all workshops.  It will ideally be for two colleagues from the same school to attend for a Year 1, Year 2 or Year 3 focus.  Practitioners will work together to design, deliver, observe and evaluate lessons as well as discussing progress and actions with the Work Group Lead. Participants will be expected to offer their feedback on the Mastery Professional Development Materials as well as the lessons that they collaboratively design.

Schools will be expected to release participants for the days required and to support them in providing time for collaborative work with the in-school and partner school colleagues.  It is expected that participating schools will be making attempts to embed mastery in their school.
