Lesson Design (Year 3 and 4 Focus)

Overview

This work group will give you the opportunity to learn with an experienced mastery specialist, where you will be collaboratively planning and working with the NCETM Mastery Professional Development Materials to improve your confidence with lesson design and providing opportunities of depth for all.

Refining teachers’ understanding of lesson design is a crucial element of developing teaching for mastery.  Practitioners will work together to design, deliver, observe and evaluate lessons as well as discussing progress and actions with the Work Group Lead.

 

The project will also make use of the planning guidance created in previous projects to update and extend it, and it will be informed by the work of the ‘Planning opportunities for Greater Depth’ project in 2017/18 and 2018/19.

How will it work?

It involves three face to face workshops with Lilli Landau, mastery specialist, across the Spring and Summer terms. Participants will be expected to attend all workshops.

There is also one further day, which involves a meeting with the two teachers from another school in the Work Group to enable joint planning and observation of each other’s lessons. This has a particular focus on the small steps required in teaching for mastery.

Who is it aimed at?

Schools who have already begun their journey towards ‘Teaching to Mastery’ and are making attempts to embed mastery in their school.

Two colleagues from the same school need to attend. This ideally should be a Year 3 or Year 4 teacher and a teacher in a middle or senior leadership role (ideally the maths lead), with experience and expertise in teaching for mastery. We find this approach works best to facilitate greater whole school change.

What is the time commitment?

Three face to face meetings (1 full day and 2 half days) and one half day visit to another work group school.

Schools will be expected to release participants for the days required and to support them in providing time for collaborative work and the delivery of project gap tasks in school.

Intended Outcomes

Participants should gain a deep understanding of the elements of effective lesson design and how the big ideas of mastery influence this, particularly regarding small steps of learning. They will be able to make good decisions about what to include or leave out, and when to supplement the materials with their own.

Teachers are expected to share their learning with others teaching maths in their school, and that this will influence the whole school’s maths lesson planning.

The impact of small steps lesson planning and learning will be seen by progress shown in children’s books.
